Flare (FLR) is a blockchain designed to bridge the gap between different networks, making it easier for assets and data to move across chains that don’t typically communicate with each other. Built to be Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible, Flare allows smart contracts to function on blockchains like XRP Ledger and Bitcoin, which weren’t originally designed to support them.
Flare Features
The Flare blockchain is built with some unique features that set it apart from other networks.
Most blockchains operate in isolation, limiting their functionality. Flare changes this by allowing Ethereum-based smart contracts to run on networks like Bitcoin and XRP Ledger, without altering their base layer.
To achieve this, Flare uses two technologies: State Connector, which securely integrates off-chain data and verifies real-world transactions, and Flare Time Series Oracle (FTSO), a decentralized system that provides real-time data feeds like crypto prices. Together, these protocols enable trustless, cross-chain communication and accurate, decentralized data for smart contracts.
Flare uses a Proof-of-Stake-based consensus mechanism, allowing participants to stake FLR tokens to secure the network. This ensures efficient, secure transactions without reliance on centralized validators.
The History of Flare
Flare was founded by Hugo Philion (CEO), Sean Rowan (CTO), and Naïri Usher (Chief Scientist), all of whom have backgrounds in finance, machine learning, and quantum computing.
Early Development & Funding
- In 2019, Flare received early investment from Ripple’s Xpring fund, which helped kickstart its development.
- In 2020, the project released its first whitepaper, originally calling its token Spark (SPARK) before later rebranding to FLR in 2022.
- By 2021, Flare had raised $11.3 million from investors.
Since then, Flare has continued to develop its ecosystem, focusing on building a fully decentralized network that supports cross-chain functionality without compromising security.
The Native Cryptocurrency: FLR
FLR is the native cryptocurrency of the Flare network. Here’s how FLR works.
- Transaction Fees - FLR is used to pay for transactions, helping to prevent spam and DDoS attacks.
- Network Security - Holders can stake FLR to participate in securing the blockchain.
- Governance - FLR holders can vote on network upgrades and proposals, influencing Flare’s future development.
- Data Provision - FLR is used to reward data providers who contribute to the (FTSO).
