On June 17–18, the Federal Reserve held its fourth interest rate policy meeting of the year. Chairman Jerome Powell announced that interest rates will remain unchanged, holding steady at 4.25%–4.50%. This decision aligns with market expectations as the Fed continues to monitor economic indicators.
Recently released labor data showed the unemployment rate remained at 4.2%, unchanged from the previous month. Since the beginning of 2025, unemployment has risen modestly by 0.2 percentage points. However, the Federal Reserve does not appear overly concerned about this gradual uptick, which may partly explain why a rate cut was not implemented at this time.
In addition to labor market data, inflation remains a central concern. Although price growth has cooled compared to 2022–2023 levels, there are fresh risks on the horizon. Notably, newly proposed tariff policies have raised the possibility of inflation resurging. With trade negotiations still unresolved and the July 9 deadline approaching for the 90-day pause on tariffs announced in April, uncertainty looms large. These geopolitical and economic tensions are prompting forecasters to remain cautious with their outlooks.
By keeping interest rates steady, the Fed is signaling flexibility. Should inflation remain under control and labor markets soften further, a rate cut later this year remains on the table. In the meantime, market analysts are adjusting their outlooks and watching closely for any signals on the Fed’s next move.
