Trade Tensions Fuel Flight to Safety
Markets were shaken last week as gold surged to reach an all-time high, while the U.S. dollar fell sharply following new tariff moves by President Donald Trump. The renewed trade conflict, particularly a 125% tariff hike on Chinese goods, triggered a broad reassessment of risk, sending investors in search of safety.
Spot gold hit a record $3,245.42 an ounce on Monday before settling slightly lower. Analysts attributed the rally to both trade tensions and macroeconomic uncertainty, including a surprisingly soft March inflation report that reignited rate cut speculation.
Dollar Faces a Crisis of Confidence
Meanwhile, the ICE U.S. Dollar Index saw its worst single-day performance since 2022, dropping below the key 100 level. ING analysts labeled the moment a “full force” confidence crisis, while Deutsche Bank pointed to signs of rapid “de-dollarization” as global markets question the dollar’s long-term status as the world’s reserve currency.
A weaker dollar made gold more attractive to international buyers, reinforcing its role as a traditional hedge against monetary instability.
Rate Cut Expectations Back in Play
With inflation data surprising to the downside and new tariffs raising concerns about economic slowdowns, traders are betting the Federal Reserve may act sooner than expected. Some forecasts now suggest a full percentage point in rate cuts could arrive by year-end.
The evolving outlook is placing pressure on yields and diminishing the dollar’s appeal. As one analyst put it, “The market is reassessing the structural attractiveness of the dollar, and the shift is happening quickly.”
Gold Soars, but Eyes Are on Bitcoin Too
While gold is grabbing headlines, Bitcoin is once again entering the conversation. The digital asset has remained resilient in recent days, holding ground despite broader volatility. Some observers are watching to see if Bitcoin might follow gold’s path, as it has during past periods of macro stress.
“Like a rising tide, the dollar’s decline is lifting other assets,” noted FxPro’s chief market analyst. LMAX Group added that Bitcoin’s ties to Fed policy and the dollar may deserve more attention than its correlation with stocks.
A Macro Recalibration in Motion
With the dollar weakening, gold at all-time highs, and crypto showing some strength, a broader shift appears to be unfolding across global markets. Central bank activity, geopolitical tensions, and shifting sentiment are all converging, and people seem to be recalibrating accordingly.
