On May 7, 2025, Ethereum rolled out one of its biggest upgrades yet, called Pectra, a hard fork on the Ethereum network. It’s an exciting step forward for the Ethereum network and its native currency, Ether (ETH), bringing new features, smoother functionality behind the scenes, and momentum for potential long-term growth. But what changed, and why are so many people watching to see what happens next with ETH?
What is Pectra?
The name Pectra is a mashup of two major upgrades: Prague (focused on Ethereum’s execution layer - where transactions happen) and Electra (focused on the consensus layer - how the network agrees on what’s true). Together, they form “Pectra,” a bundled hard fork that brings updates to both layers of the Ethereum network.
This upgrade includes a series of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) that aim to make Ethereum more efficient, more user-friendly, and better equipped to scale. It touches everything from wallet functionality and staking architecture to Layer 2 support and automation.
While it might sound technical, the real-world impact is simple: Pectra helps Ethereum work better, and that could benefit ETH holders in the long run.
The Upgrades That Could Boost ETH’s Future
Pectra introduced a set of enhancements that improve Ethereum’s performance, usability, and appeal. While 11 EIPs were included, a few stand out as potential game-changers for ETH holders.
EIP-7702: Smarter Wallets Through Account Abstraction
This upgrade gives regular Ethereum wallets the power of smart contracts, but only when needed. Users can now batch multiple actions into a single transaction, authorize apps to perform tasks on their behalf, and even have someone else pay their gas fees.
It’s a big win for ease of use and could make onboarding new users into crypto much more seamless.
EIP-7251: Scalable Staking With Higher Validator Balances
Previously, validators could only stake 32 ETH per node. Now, they can hold up to 2,048 ETH, making it easier and more cost-effective for large-scale stakers to participate. This could reduce validator sprawl and attract more institutional players.
EIP-7002: Automated Withdrawals Through Smart Contracts
This allows smart contracts to trigger validator withdrawals, opening the door to more automated, user-friendly staking services. Think "set-it-and-forget-it" style staking, with smoother management and fewer manual steps.
EIP-7691: Better Layer 2 Efficiency
This upgrade increases the number of data blobs Ethereum can process per block. More blobs equal more efficient Layer 2 rollups, which could mean lower fees and faster decentralized application performance. Since Layer 2s still use ETH for gas, more activity here can benefit ETH demand over time.
Other Notable EIPs in Pectra
While the above are the headliners, here are the other EIPs included in Pectra and what they do:
- EIP-6110 – Enables on-chain processing of validator deposits, speeding up onboarding and improving security.
- EIP-7742 – Adds dynamic adjustment of blob capacity to support future L2 scaling.
- EIP-2537 – Introduces BLS12-381 precompiled operations for more efficient cryptographic signatures.
- EIP-2935 – Makes historical block hashes accessible from Ethereum state, aiding stateless client development.
- EIP-7549 – Optimizes how attestations are structured to reduce redundancy.
- EIP-7623 – Increases calldata cost to discourage excessive resource usage.
- EIP-7685 – Standardizes requests between Ethereum’s execution and consensus layers to improve coordination.
Why This Matters for ETH
Upgrades like Pectra shape how Ethereum use cases grow, how people use it, and how valuable, from a utility perspective, ETH can become in the process.
Each improvement, from smarter wallets to more scalable staking and faster Layer 2s, adds real utility to the Ethereum network. When the network becomes easier to use, more secure, and more efficient, it often attracts more builders, users, and investors.
ETH is the fuel that powers it all.
- It’s used for gas fees on the main network and many Layer 2s.
- It’s required for staking and helping run the network.
- It’s the base asset for thousands of decentralized apps and services.
As Ethereum evolves, so does the role of ETH within it. When more people use Ethereum, the demand for ETH tends to grow alongside that adoption.
