Bridging Old and New
The Future of Business in Orange County
Leading the way in a niche market, iTrustCapital allows clients to fund IRAs with nontraditional currency, like precious metals and cryptocurrency.
Founded in 2018, iTrustCapital is an award-winning self-directed individual retirement account (IRA) software platform that allows clients to invest in alternative assets like cryptocurrencies and precious metals. What began six years ago with six team members and a few hundred clients has grown exponentially to include nearly 100 professionals, more than 53,000 active client accounts, and over $10 billion in executed transactions.
“Our goal is to inspire and empower individuals to take control of their financial futures,” says Kevin Maloney, CEO. “We’re committed to transparency, security, and innovation, ensuring our clients have access to information and feel secure exploring alternative self-directed investments.”
Before joining the iTrustCapital team, Maloney spent 25 years in C-level leadership roles in industries from technology and real estate to blockchain and financial services. He also served as a Compliance Officer and Registered Principal at PIMCO, one of the world’s largest fixed-income asset managers, and as a Vice President in institutional marketing at First American Trust. After joining iTrustCapital in 2021, Maloney quickly secured the company’s Series A financing round, which resulted in a $130 million equity rise at a $1.3 billion valuation led by three institutional growth equity investors.
THE POWER OF CRYPTO
Opening a tax-advantaged crypto IRA with iTrustCapital is simple and smooth. The company’s website guides clients through setting up an account, allowing them to choose between traditional, Roth, or Simplified Employee Pension IRAs with a minimum investment of $1,000. Clients can also transfer funds from an existing IRA or roll over an old employer-sponsored plan, like a 401(k).
While typical cryptocurrency investments are made through non-tax-advantaged accounts, purchasing cryptocurrency and precious metals through iTrustCapital’s user-friendly self-directed IRAs lets consumers take advantage of tax benefits similar to those of 401(k)s. The difference? With self-directed IRAs, “You’re in full control over what you invest in,” says Maloney. “You can choose the assets that fit your goals and interests and buy and sell crypto 24/7/365, giving you direct access to manage your own portfolio.”
While iTrustCapital doesn’t make recommendations or provide financial or tax advice, “We take pride in our learning center, which helps educate people on the assets we offer and other information that’s useful in making decisions,” says Maloney. iTrustCapital also offers conditional transactions where clients can set targets for buying or selling assets automatically when prices reach a specified level.
Maloney notes that cryptocurrency offers investors more growth potential than traditional high-yield savings accounts. “In September 2023, bitcoin was valued at around $26,500,” he says. “One year later, it was worth approximately $62,000—a remarkable 133% increase.”
Perhaps most unexpected in such a high-tech space is iTrustCapital’s commitment to personal service. “Our founders built a client-first company, emphasizing the human connection,” says Maloney. While other companies rely heavily on AI chatbots, iTrustCapital’s award-winning client service team offers personalized support, allowing clients to speak directly with a live person.
“It’s all about bridging the old financial systems and the new,” says Maloney. “By providing secure access to new and alternative assets, we help working professionals nationwide take a more active role in their financial future.”
